Women's Swimming - Warriors wrap up first day at MAC Championships

YORK, Pa. – Shaving four seconds off its seed time in the 200-yard medley relay to place sixth, the Lycoming College women’s swim team led both squads on the first day of the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on Thursday night, Feb. 15, at the Graham Aquatic Center.

The squad of freshman McKenna Zeller (White Haven, Pa./Holy Redeemer), junior Emilie Kramer (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area), sophomore Elena Pikounis (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) and freshman Cara Zortman (York, Pa./York Suburban) finished in 1:52.22 for a sixth-place finish. It bested the seed time of 1:56.88 and was a little more than a second from topping the school record of 1:51.21, set by the 2010 relay squad of Caroline LeHota, Stacy Flick, Lindsay Hunsicker and Randi Bosch.

Messiah set a new MAC record in the event with a finish of 1:46.93.

In the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay, the team of junior Amanda Waldo (Katy, Texas/Katy), senior Brianna Zawadzki (Austin, Texas/Round Rock), junior Rebecca Donohue (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) and freshman Mikayla Wright (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) placed ninth with a time of 8:54.92.

The men’s 200-yard medley relay team of senior Andrew Canavan (Caldwell, N.J./James Caldwell), sophomore Josh Caro (Ontario, Calif./Colony), junior Callan Jordan (Hurley, N.Y./Western Academy of Beijing) and sophomore Theo Gouskos (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) placed eighth with a time of 1:41.98.

Canavan, freshman Brandon Vought (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area), freshman Caleb Beard(Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and sophomore Will Gillespie (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) placed ninth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:45.13, about four seconds better than its seed time.

The Warrior women finished the first day of the championships in ninth place with 44 points. Messiah ranks first with 70 points. The men sit at seventh with 40 points, while Arcadia leads the field with 68 points. 

The MAC Championships continue on Friday at 10 a.m. with the start of preliminary qualifiers in three events before four championships will be contested starting at 6 p.m. at the Graham Aquatic Center.
