Wrestling - Huskies Drop EWL Match to Visiting Clarion Friday Night

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team got off to a strong start with two victories, but could not contain the momentum in a 30-9 loss to visiting Clarion Friday night (Feb. 9) in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action.


Bloomsburg started off the night with a 9-7 decision at 125 pounds by Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) over Gavin Park, before Andy Schutz (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) doubled BU's lead with a 7-0 decision over Roshaun Cooley at 133 pounds. Clarion would take control after falling behind 6-0, with three straight bonus-point victories. No. 5 Brock Zacherl got the Golden Eagles on the board with a 27-8 tech fall (6:50) over Shawn Orem (Pasadena, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) at 141, before Taylor Ortz gave the visitors a 9-4 lead with a 12-1 major decision over Braden Stahlnecker (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) at 149. Avery Shay won the third straight bonus-point bout for Clarion at 157 pounds with a fall (7:48) by sudden victory over Kevin Laubach Jr. (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) to make it 15-6 Clarion, before Nate Newberry (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) won a thrilling 4-3 decision in the second tie-breaker with riding time at 165. Newberry's marathon win got Bloomsburg within 15-9 after six bouts. Clarion closed out the match with another string of wins, this time taking each of the last four bouts. Clarion won of the last four matches by decision, separated by a total of five points. Dom Rigous defeated Kyle Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) by decision 2-0 at 174, before Greg Bulsak won a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) at 184. Dustin Conti earned a 3-1 decision over Logan Womelsdorf(Benton, Pa./Northwest Area) at 197, before Toby Cahill closed out the match in bonus-point fashion by pinning Bruce Graeber(Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) 1:09 into the first period at 285.

The loss moves Bloomsburg to 5-8 overall and 2-4 in the EWL, while Clarion moves to 9-4 and 4-1 in league competition.

The Huskies hit the mat again on Sunday (Feb. 11) when they travel to Binghamton for a non-league contest. The action is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
