ROCKY MOUNT, Va. – Three Lycoming College wrestlers placed in the top three to earn a trip to the NCAA Division III Championships, with junior 285-pounder Garrett Wesneski (Canton, Pa./Canton Area) taking first, senior 174-pounder Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) second and junior 149-pounder Trevor Corl (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area) third each taking the next step after successful second days at the NCAA Southeast Regional on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Franklin County High School.

The three grapplers will now get set for the NCAA Division III Championships, with the two-day event beginning at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9, in Cleveland’s Public Auditorium.

Lycoming finished the tournament in fifth place with 80 points, its highest finish at a regional since taking fifth at the 2007 Midwest Regional. No. 15 Messiah took the team title with 147 points, No. 14 York (Pa.) second with 133, and Ferrum and Johns Hopkins tied for third with 93.

Wesneski’s semifinal win was a smartly wrestled 4-0 win over King’s Ralph Bernardo. He opened the match feeling out the larger Bernardo before reaching low, grabbing a double and tripping Bernardo for the takedown. He rode out the period and the second period, accumulating 3:32 in riding time and a penalty point for stalling. Wesneski choose neutral in the final period and neither grappler could score a takedown, sealing Wesneski’s trip to Cleveland.

In the championship, he posted a 4-0 win over Ferrum’s Alveno Matthews, posting a second-period escape, two penalty points and a riding time point to notch the win.

For Conrad, his semifinal match with York’s Joseph Sindoni may have turned after a restart in the second period. Leading 2-0 but rapidly losing riding time after nearly a minute had rolled off the clock in the period, Conrad took off quick on the restart, getting to both feet and trying to break a wristlock. As they neared the edge of the mat, Conrad bent forward to work on the wristlock and as he did so, Sindoni moved forward, then slipped over top and fell, giving Conrad the easy reversal.

Conrad opened the match aggressively, scoring a takedown less than 90 seconds in to take the early lead. After the second-period reversal, he added a penalty point for Sindoni’s stalling and a riding time point to round out the win.

In the finals, Conrad dropped a 5-0 decision to third-ranked Ben Swarr of Messiah.

Corl sealed a trip to nationals with a 3-1 sudden-victory win over Wilkes’ Josh Evans in the third-place bout, as he got in on a single and held the leg for nearly 20 seconds before finally getting his hand around the waist and putting Evans on his belly. Both grapplers had earned escapes in regulation, but neither could land a successful shot until Corl’s overtime attack.

After a second-period pin by seventh-ranked Stephen Maloney of Messiah dropped Corl into the wrestlebacks, he advanced to the third-place match with a 4-0 win over Washington & Lee’s Bryce Crew. Corl shimmied out from underneath and secured a reversal at the edge of the mat to open the scoring in the second period before a penalty point for a last-second takedown sealed the win in the third period.

Sophomore Hadyn Swartwood (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) finished in sixth place, after dropping two tight decisions to fall into the fifth-place match at 157 pounds, dropping a 3-2 match to York’s Eric Hutchinson in the semifinals and 5-3 to Johns Hopkins’ Dominick Reyes.

Sophomore Eric Hunt (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) fell out of the tournament, falling to Greensboro’s Christopher Haskin in 59 seconds.
