Young Wins 100-Yard Breaststroke; Women's Swimming Remains Second At PSACs

YORK, Pa. - Redshirt senior Nikki Young (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) captured the conference title in the 100-yard breaststroke and broke a school-record in the event during morning preliminaries to keep the Bloomsburg University women's swimming team in second place at the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships at the Graham Aquatic Center with one day remaining.

The Huskies have a total of 852 points in the overall team standings and trails only West Chester's 1,368 team points in a race for the conference championship.

Young posted the fastest time in the morning preliminaries with a school-time of 1:02.11 in the 100-yard breaststroke. She then was able to hold off the field in the finals to capture the PSAC title in the event with a time of 1:02.32. Both times were NCAA "B" cuts. Joining her in the A final on Friday night were Samantha Carpenter (Sunbury, Pa./Shamokin Area) and Kelsey Neff(Elysburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) to assist in the overall team scoring. Carpenter finished sixth overall with a time of 1:05.73 while Neff placed eighth after touching the wall in 1:06.81.

Sarah Ritter (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) finished 13th overall - fifth in the B final - with a time of 1:07.11 in the 100-yard breaststroke while Lauren Minford (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley)tied for second in the C final (tied for 18th overall) with a mark of 1:07.51.

The evening started with both Becca Cubbler (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) and Kelley McHugh (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) posting NCAA "B" marks in the 500-yard freestyle. Cubbler placed sixth overall with a time of 4:59.93 while McHugh, who has had a sensational week in her first conference championship meet, came in seventh with a time of 5:00.92. Karly Hursey (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) finished second in the B final - 10th overall - with a time of 5:07.58 and Chelsea Ackerson(Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) placed second in the C final - 18th overall - with a mark of 5:10.85.

Kiera Wadsworth (Blakeslee, Pa./Ridley) led the Huskies' contingent in the 100-yard backstroke as she placed eighth overall with a time of 58.81. Sydney Mercer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Millville)won the B final and took ninth place as she touched the wall in 58.39 during her evening swim. Shannon Ball (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) tied for first in the C final (tied for 17th overall) as she came in with a time of 59.36.

The final individual event of the night saw Courtney Middleton(Vineland, N.J./Vineland) place second overall in the 200-yard butterfly as she posted a time of 2:07.67. Abby Kling (York, Pa./Spring Grove) was 21st overall as she finished fifth in the C final with a time of 2:16.37.

Lindsay Mooney (Salisbury, Md./Parkside), Minford, McHugh, and Cubbler then teamed up for a second-place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay as they combined for a time of 7:41.72.

The conference championships will conclude on Saturday as morning preliminaries are slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. with evening finals scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
