ALTOONA, Pa. – Freshman Elin Johansson (Göteborg, Sweden / Shattuck-St. Mary’s (Minn.)) provided three assists, all in the first half, to provide the spark for the Lycoming College women’s soccer team, as it won its first game of the year, 3-1, on the road at Penn State-Altoona in non-conference action at Spring Run Stadium on Friday night, Sept. 14.

The Warriors (1-6 overall) were paced by Johansson’s touch, as she became the 10th player in school history to post three assists in a single game. Sophomore Elle Sarracco (Wantage, N.J./High Point Regional) scored twice off Johansson helpers to pace Lycoming’s offense.

After Penn State-Altoona (2-2-1 overall) scored off an own goal in the 17th minute to take the lead, Lycoming responded with two goals in a three-minute span. Freshman Jayden Leighow (Unityville, Pa./Hughesville) tied the game in the 23rd minute, when Johansson sent a pass ahead and Leighow found the bottom left corner. Three minutes later, Sarracco scored when she got a pass from Johansson before dribbling into the box and firing from the right side.

Sarracco added another score in the 41st minute, firing into the bottom left corner from 12 yards out on another give from Johansson.

The Warriors fired 15 shots in the game, with Sarracco just missing a hat trick after she also hit the crossbar in the contest. Penn State Altoona took 11 shots, but forced senior Helen Ross (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) to make just three saves to earn the win. Riley Barrett stopped six for the Lions.

The win snapped a string of four straight one-goal losses, with Lycoming outshooting its opponents in the last three of those contests.

The Warriors get back on the field on Sunday, Sept. 16, when they host Alvernia University at 4 p.m. in the MAC Commonwealth opener at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
