WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Sophomore Elle Sarracco (Wantage, N.J./High Point Regional) scored her first goal of the season to cut the lead to one in the 64th minute, but Penn College was able to hold off several attacks late from the Lycoming College women’s soccer team for a 2-1 non-conference decision in the annual Battle for the Lumber at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening, Sept. 12.

Freshman Kyleigh Balint (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) was able to control the ball past a Wildcat defender coming out of a corner kick scrum in Lycoming’s defensive zone and she delivered a lead pass to Sarracco, who fired a hard shot to beat the keeper in a 1-on-1 situation. The assist is the first of Balint’s career.

The Warriors (0-6 overall) had their chances throughout the game and outshot the Wildcats (3-0 overall) by a margin of 19-12. Two of the 19 shots beat everything but the cross bar in the first half, including a beautiful shot by freshman Jayden Leighow (Unityville, Pa./Hughesville) in the 45th minute that hit the bottom of the bar and fell parallel to the goalline.

Dominique Brown gave Penn College the lead in the 46th minute, and Megan Bugbee scored off a corner in the 62nd to give Penn College the 2-0 lead before Sarracco’s goal cut the deficit. Lycoming had a great chance late, when freshman Tara Reese (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) came charging in and firing from 25 yards out as the ball came out of a scrum in the box. Penn College’s keeper, Taylor Gonzales dove right to get her hands on it before the shot could hit the upper 90.

Senior goal keeper Helen Ross (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) made four saves, including a diving save in a 1-on-1 battle in the 41st minute to keep the score tied 0-0 in the first half. Gonzales finished the game with six saves for the Wildcats.

The Warriors are back in action when they take on Penn State Altoona in a non-conference game in Altoona, Pa., at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14.
