BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University wrestling team suffered a 24-11 loss to visiting George Mason University in the home opener on Thursday night at the Nelson Field House. The Huskies dropped to 0-3 overall while the Patriots improved to 2-0 on the young season. It was also the initial Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match of the season for both teams.

Things started promising for the Huskies as junior Willy Girard (Williamstown, Pa/Williams Valley) earned a 16-7 major decision victory over Talha Farooq to give Bloomsburg a 4-0 advantage. Girard dominated from start-to-finish as he took a 5-3 lead after one period and then extended the advantage to 11-5 after two periods. He scored a reversal early in the third and, after an escape by Farooq, scored a late takedown to earn the major decision. Girard improved to 11-5 overall on the season and 2-1 in duals. It was his second major decision win of the year.

After redshirt junior Lewis Williams (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) dropped a tough 5-4 decision in the in the first tiebreaker, freshman Aaron Coleman (Iselin, N.J./John F. Kennedy Memorial) earned the first dual win of his collegiate career as he defeated Julio Alegria, 8-5, at 141 pounds. Coleman started quickly as he led 7-2 after the opening period then had to hang on for the three-point win. Coleman improved to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in duals on the year.

The Patriots responded with three consecutive major decision victories to take a 15-7 lead heading into the 174-pound match. There, redshirt sophomore Anthony Vetrano (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) and George Mason's Phillip Stolfi battled in, arguably, the match of the night. Vetrano led much of the bout as he took a 4-0 lead early in the third period. But, Stolfi came back to tie the match at 6-6 with a takedown as the horn sounded to end the third period. Stolfi then scored a takedown midway through the one-minute extra session to score the 8-6 sudden victory win over Vetrano to extend George Mason's lead to 18-7.

At 184 pounds, redshirt junior Trevor Allard (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) earned the Huskies' last victory of the night as he posted a 12-4 major decision win over Paul Pierce to improve to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in duals. Allard led 5-1 after two periods but scored three takedowns in the third period and earned the riding time point for the major decision. It was his team-leading fourth major decision of the year.

George Mason closed out the night with a pair of decisions at 197 and 285 to post the 24-11 victory.
