BU Huskies Men's Swimming Has Strong First Day At Zippy Invitational; Second After Day One

COMPLETE DAY ONE RESULTS

AKRON, Ohio - The Bloomsburg University men's swimming team had a fast day in the pool and finds itself in second place after the opening day of the Zippy Invitational on Friday at the Ocasek Natatorium, hosted by the University of Akron. The Huskies finished with 461 team points on day one and trails only Oakland University (726.5 points) in a Division I-heavy field.


Bloomsburg posted 24 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times on Friday and had an NCAA "B" cut from redshirt junior Kyle Dix (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) in the 50-yard freestyle. Redshirt sophomores Lucas Haywood (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill)Tyler Reed (Hereford, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), and Matt Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) paced the Huskies with two PSAC marks each on the day.

The Huskies started fast as they got a second-place finish from the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Dix, junior Jordan Wyant (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity), junior Colin Bauer (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), and sophomore Collin Hummel(Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) as they combined for a time of 1:22.33 - six-tenths of a second behind Oakland's first-place time of 1:21.70. Bloomsburg's time is tops in the PSAC this season and is the tenth-fastest mark in Division II. The "B" team of sophomore Noah Cancro (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford), Rocchi, freshman Jace Fry (Palmyra, Pa./Lower Dauphin), and freshman Pat Agnew (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) took fifth with a time of 1:24.47 - the second-best mark in the conference to date.

In the opening individual final of the night, junior Doug Boehme (Blue Bell, Pa./Buxmont Christian Academy) took fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:42.15 - the seventh-best mark in the conference this season. Junior Corey Smith(Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) finished eighth in the finals with a time of 4:42.67 which was slightly off the pace of his morning swim time of 4:41.84 which is the sixth-fastest time in the PSAC. Four more Huskies scored in the event as Haywood won the "C" final with a time of 4:55.28 to finish 17th overall. Freshman Cameron Junk (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) was right behind with a time of 4:56.10 to take second in the "C" final - 18th overall - while Reed was 19th overall and third in the "C" final after touching the wall in 5:00.28. Finally, freshman Maxim Kowalski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) placed 24th overall with a time of 5:04.36.

Freshman Colton Schnars (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) placed third overall in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.52 which is the second-fastest time in the conference this season. In the "B" final, Cancro finished third - 11th overall - with a time of 1:55.86 while senior Philip Nawn (Media, Pa./Penncrest) took fifth - 13th overall - after posting a mark of 1:56.14. Four more Huskies scored in the "C" final as Wyant won with a time of 1:55.96 to finish 17th overall. Rocchi was right behind in second (18th overall) after touching in 1:56.32 while senior Matthew Schulz (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) took third (19th overall) by posting a mark of 1:57.99. Freshman Nicholas Madey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) was seventh in the "C" final - 23rd overall - with a time of 2:01.11.

The Huskies showcased their sprinting talent in the 50-yard freestyle as Bloomsburg had three of the top eight times in the "A" final. Dix finished second with his NCAA "B" mark of 20.54 which is the fastest time in the PSAC this season and ranks tied for 12th in the country. Hummel took fourth with a time of 20.82 which missed the NCAA "B" standard by one one-hundredth of a second. Hummel's time is second to Dix in the conference. Bauer, meanwhile, took eighth with a time of 21.42. Agnew finished 16th overall with a time of 21.74 while Fry won the "C" final and finished 17th after touching the wall in 21.39.

In the final race of the night, Bloomsburg had three of the top six times in the 400-yard medley relay. Schnars, Rocchi, Dix, and Hummel went 3:21.55 to finish second in the event. The time is tops in the PSAC and 13th in Division II this season. Taking fourth was the team of Smith, Cancro, Fry, and Wyant as they posted a time of 3:27.60. Finally, the quartet of senior Nathan Mihalko (Windber, Pa./Richland), Nawn, Schulz, and Haywood touched in 3:28.81 to place sixth overall.

Day two of the Zippy Invitational gets underway at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning with finals slated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
