Sophomore Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) and senior Alyssa Mack (Walnutport, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) paced the Huskies with 18 points apiece. Saxton finished 7-of-10 from the field and was a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc - her first three-point attempts of the season - en route to her season-high in scoring. Mack, meanwhile, was 7-of-12 from the field and 3-of-6 from long range in just 20 minutes of action. Senior Marissa Molnar (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added nine points on three triples while sophomore Payton Spadaccino(Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock South) added career-highs in points (8) and rebounds (8) in the win.
Saxton and Spadaccino combined for 13 of the Huskies' first 15 points as Bloomsburg raced out to the early 11-point advantage. Saxton scored seven on a three-pointer and a pair of layups while Spadaccino hit two triples for her six points during the spurt. After Molnar gave the Huskies their biggest advantage of the first quarter, 20-8, on a three-pointer with two minutes left in the period, the Lakers went on a mini 6-1 run to cut the Bloomsburg lead to 21-14 after one.
The Huskies built the advantage back up to 14 with a 7-0 run to start the second quarter on five points from Mack and two more from Saxton. Mercyhurst cut the lead to six, 30-24, with two minutes left before a three-point play from Mack gave the Huskies a 33-24 lead at halftime as the teams went to their respective locker rooms.
The two teams split the first ten points of the third quarter as the Huskies still maintained a 38-29 lead with 8:10 remaining in the period. Bloomsburg then went on a 15-0 run over the next six minutes - on five consecutive three-pointers - to blow the game open, 53-29, with 2:36 left in the third. Molnar and Mack had a pair of three-pointers while Saxton added the other during the game-changing run. The Huskies built the lead to 25 before settling for a 57-34 lead after three.
Bloomsburg extended the advantage to 65-36 with 5:02 remaining before settling for the 19-point victory as Mercyhurst outscored the Huskies, 15-5, over the final five minutes.
Bloomsburg shot 26-of-51 (51.0%) from the field and was 11-of-21 (52.4%) from beyond the arc in the victory. The Huskies also out-rebounded the Lakers, 37-29.
Maria Lapertosa led Mercyhurst with 12 points while Meghan Komendarek added 11 as the Lakers shot 17-of-54 (31.5%) from the field and only 4-of-18 (22.2%) from deep. The Huskies completely shut down Mercyhurst's leading scorer Nicolete Newman who did not score on the day. Newman was 0-of-12 from the field and 0-of-7 from beyond the arc. Mercyhurst's third-leading scorer, Emily Shopene, was just 1-of-9 for two points.
Bloomsburg returns to action next Saturday, December 15, when it travels to Jefferson University for a non-conference matchup against the Rams. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
