BU Women's Swimming Seventh After Day One At Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The Bloomsburg University women's swimming team had a strong opening day at the Zippy Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron, on Friday at the Ocasek Natatorium. Against a Division I-heavy field, the Huskies find themselves in seventh place after day one with a total of 138 points.

Junior Becca Cubbler (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford), sophomore Kelley McHugh (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower), and sophomore Lindsay Mooney (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) scored points for the Huskies, individually, while the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay had fast swims to aid in the team scoring. Bloomsburg turned in 18 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) marks on day one with Mooney, freshman Liz Jackson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), and junior Kiera Wadsworth (Blakeslee, Pa./Ridley) posting two each.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of senior Marykate Boylan (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest), junior Shannon Ball(New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff), Wadsworth, and Mooney finished 13th overall with a time of 1:36.58. It is the 15th-best time in Division II this season and is the second-fastest time in the conference to date.

Cubbler followed with a sixth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA "B" mark of 4:55.46. She finished third during the morning prelims and dropped more than a second off of her morning swim in the finals. Her finals time is the fourth-best time in Division II this season and is the top time in the conference. McHugh also scored for the Huskies in the event as she took 18th overall - 2nd in the "C" final - with a finals time of 5:02.12 - also an NCAA "B" mark. She cut more than five-and-a-half seconds off of her morning mark and currently has the sixth-best time in the PSAC.

The last of Bloomsburg's individual scoring came from Mooney who posted an NCAA "B" cut in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.02. She finished 20th overall and fourth in the "C" final of the event. The time is the third-fastest mark in the conference this season.

In the final relay, senior Sydney Mercer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Millville), senior Samantha Carpenter (Sunbury, Pa./Shamokin Area), Mooney, and Cubbler teamed up for a time of 3:51.04 in the 400-yard medley relay to finish 11th overall. The time is third-best in the conference and 11th in Division II this season. The "B" team of Wadsworth, freshman Carlie Owens(Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone), Boylan, and Ball also put together a strong swim and finished 17th overall with a time of 3:57.43 - fifth-fastest in the PSAC this season.

Day two of the Zippy Invitational gets underway at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning with finals slated to begin at 6:00 p.m.
