LEXINGTON, Ky. - Redshirt senior Sarah Gomish (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll Catholic) of the Bloomsburg University women's volleyball has been named one of 14 recipients across the country to be awarded with the 2018 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship. In conjunction with the award, Bloomsburg University Director of Athletics Dr. Michael McFarland and head volleyball coach Dan Krieger have announced that Gomish will stay on and serve as the program's first-ever graduate assistant coach.

"We are extremely proud of Sarah and what her leadership meant to our first-year program," Dr. McFarland said. "She will be a tremendous coach from the bench as she served as a coach on the court. The AVCA Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship will only make her a stronger asset to Bloomsburg Volleyball as she transitions to the sideline to mentor the young female student-athletes she will serve."

The scholarship provides the opportunity for up-and-coming volleyball coaches to attend their first AVCA Convention with the scholarship money used to pay for Convention registration and hotel costs. Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to interact with successful coaches from all levels and explore the limitless networking and educational opportunities available at the AVCA Convention that make this an annual can't-miss event.

"On behalf of the committee I would like to congratulate the scholarship recipients," said Coaches 4 Coaches Committee Chair and Morehead State University Head Coach Jaime Gordon. "This was an incredibly talented pool of applicants and a difficult process. We are confident that these 14 represent the passion and commitment of their peers, and will be outstanding ambassadors for the Coaches 4 Coaches program. I am grateful for the time and thorough commitment that the committee has dedicated to these applicants, as well as the many individuals that give so generously to make this program possible."

In order to be eligible for the Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship, applicants must be active AVCA members who are attending their first AVCA Convention. Now in its 10th year, a selection committee reviews the applications and makes their decisions based on academics, contributions to the sport of volleyball on and off the court, a professional letter of recommendation, and a personal written submission outlining their desire to attend the AVCA Annual Convention and their aspirations in coaching.

After playing three seasons at Lock Haven, Gomish played her final collegiate year with the Huskies during the program's inaugural season in 2018 and provided tremendous leadership and experience for the young roster. Gomish led the Huskies in kills with 328 (3.49 per set) and points with 349 (3.71 per set) while ranking second on the team with 289 digs (3.07 per set). She recorded the 1,000th kill of her collegiate career on September 15 at California and then reached the same milestone in digs against Mercyhurst on October 26. Gomish ranked eighth in the conference in kills per set (3.49) and 11th in points per set (3.71). For her collegiate career, she totaled 1,195 kills and 1,046 digs.

"I am very excited to have Sarah stay with our program as a graduate assistant," said Kreiger, who guided the Huskies to a 6-22 overall record in their first season. "She has advanced her knowledge of this sport tremendously throughout her collegiate career. Sarah has a strong desire to be a coach and is very invested in becoming the best coach she can be. Our program will benefit from her energy and commitment. In our time together, she has definitely made me a better coach and person. I am hopeful that I can do my part to return the favor and get her coaching career off to a great start."

This year's AVCA Convention will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from December 12-16. It will feature more than 70 educational sessions with more than 2,000 volleyball coaches expected to be in attendance.
