Cubbler Posts Two NCAA "B" Marks; Women's Swimming Finishes Seventh At Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - Junior Becca Cubbler (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) concluded her sensational weekend in the pool with a pair of NCAA "B" cuts on Sunday on the final day of the Zippy Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron. As a team, the Huskies finished seventh out of ten schools with 426 points. Eight of the ten schools that competed this weekend are Division I institutions.

The Huskies finished the day with 23 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) marks as six different swimmers - Cubbler, sophomore Kelley McHugh (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower), freshman Emily Smith (Youngwood, Pa./Hempfield), sophomore Amelia Besterman (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), senior Abby Kling (York, Pa./Spring Grove), and redshirt freshman Sarah Campion (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) - led the way with two each.

Cubbler started the day with an NCAA "B" swim in the 1650-yard freestyle as she posted a time of 17:08.71 to finish fifth overall in the event. The time is the second-fastest in the conference and tenth-best in the country this season. McHugh also had a solid swim in the event as she finished 21st overall after touching the wall in 17:39.70 - the fifth-best mark in the conference to date. Smith, Besterman, and Kling also qualified for the conference championship in the 1650-yard freestyle.

Junior Kiera Wadsworth (Blakeslee, Pa./Ridley) scored for the Huskies in the 200-yard backstroke as she placed 23rd overall (seventh in the "C" final) with a time of 2:06.60. Her morning preliminary time of 2:06.30 is the third-best mark in the PSAC this season. McHugh and senior Sydney Mercer (Bloomsburg, Pa./Millville) did not qualify for the finals but posted the fifth- and sixth-best times in the conference during morning preliminaries. McHugh went 2:07.25 while Mercer posted a time of 2:07.54.

Cubbler earned her second NCAA "B" mark of the day with a time of 51.83 in the 100-yard freestyle as she placed 17th overall by winning the "C" final. The time is second in the PSAC and 31st in the country this season. Senior Marykate Boylan (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest) and sophomore Lindsay Mooney (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) also scored in the event as Boylan finished 22nd overall (sixth in the "C" final) with a time of 52.74 while Mooney was 24th overall (eighth in the "C" final) with a finals time of 52.97.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, senior Samantha Carpenter (Sunbury, Pa./Shamokin Area) took fourth in the "C" final (20th overall) with a time of 2:24.68 - ninth-best in the PSAC this season.

The Huskies then ended the three-day event with an eighth-place result in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the foursome of Mooney, junior Shannon Ball (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff), Boylan, and Cubbler touched the wall in 3:28.47. It marks the top time in the conference this season and is the 11th-best mark in the country.

The three-day event concludes the first half of the season for the men's and women's swimming teams. The Huskies will be back in the pool for their winter training in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, beginning in early January. Bloomsburg will participate in the FLAC Winter Training Invitational on Wednesday, January 9 and then will head to State College to compete against the Nittany Lions of Penn State University on Saturday, January 19.
