Dix, Schnars Highlight Huskies Men's Swimming Results On Sunday

AKRON, Ohio - Redshirt junior Kyle Dix (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and freshman Colton Schnars (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) each posted NCAA "B" marks with Schnars breaking the school record in the 200-yard backstroke as the Bloomsburg University men's swimming team wrapped up the three-day Zippy Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron, on Sunday. Bloomsburg finished second out of five schools in the three-day event after earning 1528.5 points over the weekend. Only Oakland University (2376.5) finished ahead of the Huskies in the team standings while Bloomsburg finished ahead of St. Bonaventure (1308.5), Niagara University (1236), and Clarion University (875.5).

Bloomsburg posted 24 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) marks on the day with four different swimmers - junior Corey Smith (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn), junior Doug Boehme (Blue Bell, Pa./Buxmont Christian Academy), freshman Cameron Junk (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen), and freshman Jace Fry (Palmyra, Pa./Lower Dauphin) - paving the way with two each.

Schnars posted a time of 1:49.81 in the 200-yard backstroke to finish second overall in the event and to become the first Bloomsburg swimmer in program history to break 1:50.00 in the event. The previous school record was held by Aaron Cancro (Limerick/Spring-Ford) who posted a time of 1:50.84 during the 2015 season. The time is second in the PSAC this season and is the 26th-best mark in Division II. The Huskies had two others score in the event as Smith finished seventh overall with a time of 1:56.86 in the finals while freshman Carson Hilliard (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) finished 15th overall (seventh in the "B" final) with a time of 2:01.89.

Dix, meanwhile, earned his NCAA "B" swim in the 100-yard freestyle as he touched the wall in 45.37 to finish third overall in the event. It marks the top time in the conference this season and is the 22nd-best mark in the country to date. Five others scored in the event with all five posting PSAC qualifying marks. Sophomore Collin Hummel (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) was seventh overall with a time of 46.41 while junior Jordan Wyant (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) placed tenth overall (2nd in the "B" final) with a finals time of 46.33. In the "C" final, junior Colin Bauer (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) tied for second (tied for 18th overall) with a time of 47.76. Redshirt sophomore Lucas Haywood (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) was fifth (21st overall) with a time of 47.92 while freshman Pat Agnew (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) was seventh (23rd overall) touching in 48.39.

Smith started the day with a third-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:12.56 - the second-best mark in the PSAC this season. Boehme, meanwhile, was ninth after competing the event in 16:42.25 - the seventh-best mark in the conference to date. Junk was 11th overall with a time of 17:21.86.

After the 200-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle events, four Huskies scored in the 200-yard breaststroke with all four qualifying for the conference meet in February. Sophomore Noah Cancro (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) took sixth overall with a time of 2:09.54 - the fifth-best mark in the PSAC - while redshirt sophomore Matt Rocchi (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) placed eighth with a time of 2:10.25 - the seventh-fastest time in the conference this season. Freshman Nicholas Madey (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) took second in the "B" final (10th overall) after touching the wall in 2:11.85 while freshman Matt Marvin (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) was second in the "C" final (18th overall) with a time of 2:18.55 - the first conference-qualifying mark of his collegiate career.

Three Huskies scored points in the 200-yard butterfly with all three swimming in the "B" final on Sunday evening. Fry took second (10th overall) with a time of 1:55.73 which is the fifth-best mark in the conference this season. Senior Matthew Schulz (Norristown, Pa./Methacton) placed fourth (12th overall) in 1:59.48 while freshman Maxim Kowalski(Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) was seventh (15th overall) by posting a mark of 2:05.31.

In the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Schnars, Wyant, Hummel, and Dix finished second overall with a time of 3:03.64. It is the top time in the PSAC, and 15th in the country, this season.

The three-day event concludes the first half of the season for the men's and women's swimming teams. The Huskies will be back in the pool for their winter training in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, beginning in early January. Bloomsburg will participate in the FLAC Winter Training Invitational on Wednesday, January 9 and then will head to State College to compete against the Nittany Lions of Penn State University on Saturday, January 19.
