The John Bower basketball league was founded in 1921 by John H. Bower, a probation officer who wanted to provide area youth with an interesting weekly activity. He believed that would keep the youth of out of situations which would bring them trouble.

The league was in danger of not having a place to play games. The league, which consists of about 500 players of different ages from 60 church teams, is mostly a fun league for the teams involved. It is believed that since it's conception the program has had at least 47,000 youth in the program.

This year, the league will play at the Bardo Gym at Penn College and at the Curtin Middle School. Games will start at 9:00 am through 4:00 pm. The league runs from December through February 2019.
