Nearly 1,200 girls, spectators, volunteers and community members gathered on Sunday, December 2, for the Girls on the Run of Greater Susquehanna Valley 5K event, the culminating moment of the Girls on the Run season.

“Girls on the Run empowers young girls and women to be their unique selves, set goals, be confident and so much more. Although the program includes running, the weekly lessons encourage participants and coaches to recognize their Star Power, build connections, and develop healthy habits,” said Shannon Butters, executive director. “At the beginning of the season, completing a 5K may seem impossible, to some of these girls, but our goal is to show them that with hard work and determination the impossible can become possible.”

Girls on the Run is a nationally known physical activity-based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in 3rd - 8th grades. During the 10-week program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and encourage community service while they prepare for the end-of-season celebratory 5K event.

Throughout the council, almost 120 trained volunteer coaches facilitated the curriculum to 30 teams of girls this season, helping equip them with the physical and emotional skills necessary to carry them over the 5K finish line at The Miller Center for Recreation and Wellness in Lewisburg, PA.

About Girls on the Run
Much more than a running program, Girls on the Run inspires girls in 3rd – 8th grades to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through a 10-week curriculum that includes dynamic discussions, activities and fun running games. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.
