OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A 14-2 run early in the fourth quarter helped separate the Lycoming College women’s basketball team from Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 1, as Lycoming shot 50 percent in the final period to post a 63-55 MAC Commonwealth win at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Both sophomore Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) and junior Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) finished with 20 points for the Warriors (5-2 overall, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth). Lutz added eight rebounds, two steals and a block, and Kline had 13 rebounds and four assists in her third double-double of the season. Junior Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) added 10 points, five rebounds, five steals and two assists and senior Becca Painter (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) notched nine points and four assists.

Down by two points early in the fourth quarter, the Warriors went on a run of seven straight points to take a 49-44 lead, starting the run on an old-fashioned 3-point play from Kline. Stevenson cut the lead to three with a driving layup with 6:18 left, but Painter secured a steal at midcourt, then swished a 3-pointer through from the left corner, starting a seven-point run that she finished with a jumper with 4:36 left to make it 56-46. The Mustangs closed within six once more, but couldn’t get any closer in the final moments.

The Warriors shot 39 percent (22-of-56) from the field in the game, but that percentage rose in each quarter before the team hit 7-of-14 in the fourth. The team also hit 17-of-20 (85 percent) at the free throw line and held a 17-9 advantage in points off turnover despite Stevenson (2-5 overall, 0-2 MAC Commonwealth) forcing two more turnovers.

In the third quarter, Lycoming used a 7-3 run to open the quarter and take its first lead of the half after a 3-pointer from Kline. From there, the two teams battled through the next five minutes, with neither team taking more than one-possession lead until a bucket McFadden made it 42-38 with 1:10 left. However, the Mustangs scored five points in response, taking a 43-42 lead into the final 10 minutes.

In the first quarter, the Mustangs were able to get the first bucket and led throughout, taking a five-point lead at 15-10 with a layup by Laila Abdul-Rahman with 56 seconds left. Lycoming came back in the second period to tie it at 16 with a 6-1 run and a pair of free throws from Painter gave the team a 22-20 lead with 2:49 left. Stevenson, however, scored the last five points of the half to take a 25-22 advantage into the locker room.

Hannah Crist led the Mustangs with 16 points and Jonyae Curry added 10 points and seven rebounds. Olivia Coleman posted eight points, nine rebounds and three blocks and Brandi Hall had five assists. The Mustangs shot 35 percent (20-of-58) from the field, but just 10 percent (2-of-20) from 3-point range.

The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Dec. 5, when they head to Lebanon Valley College for an 8 p.m. MAC Commonwealth game.
